Marc joined the Hunter Institute of Mental Health in February 2009. He is a qualified journalist and communication professional, having completed the National Council for the Training Journalists pre-entry course (UK) and a Bachelor of Communication (Honours). Marc is also a full member of the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA). He has 16 years’ experience working in and with the media, both as a senior print journalist (UK), in media and communication for the National Health Service (UK) and the South Australian Health Department (mental health reform).
Marc is currently Acting Program Manager for the Mindframe National Media Initiative’s education and training program, ensuring responsible and accurate portrayals of mental illness and suicide in the Australian mass media. He manages a team of nine staff on the Mindframe National Media Initiative, which works with a number of sectors in a collaborative relationship to facilitate better understanding about issues to consider when working with the media around mental illness and suicide.
Managing such an important national program at the Institute, with such a supportive team, is a pleasure and a privilege.
Marc plays a leading role managing resource development and dissemination nationally to the media, health sector, universities, police and entertainment industry. Marc is also involved in high level stakeholder engagement, which includes undertaking face-to-face media training, presentations at national health and media conferences, university lectures for journalism and public relations students, and workshops for the mental health and suicide prevention sector. This work also contributes to the evidence-base towards future resource enhancement and development.
A Mindframe team highlight for Marc over the past two years has been a far reaching consultation exercise with the media and health sectors in redeveloping Mindframe resources so that they are fit for purpose – including a new website and branding launched in 2012, and a media book in 2013.
As well as line managing staff in the Mindframe team, Marc also sits and contributes to the Institute’s management team.
Marc is passionate about working in the mental health and suicide prevention sectors, and looking forward to continuing to learn and contribute to these areas.
